The boy's parents decide that spending everything they have to go out of state is too risky.

They spend their money on as much food and clothing as they can buy.

Their money doesn't stretch far. The boy's father tries to find a job but times are tight and no one is willing to hire someone who doesn't speak the language.

The boy's father does jobs around the neighborhood, fixing people's machines for a couple of bucks here and there.

Their lives are bleak, eking out an existence, day by day, always worried about where money will come from, condemned to live in derelict houses for the rest of their lives.
