The boy makes up a story, doesn't show his mother the marks on his arms, excuses him to wash up.

He washes the marks in the shower, crying as the water falls on the welts.

He pretends that it never happened at school, goes about the days as normal. His teacher leaves him alone for the most part, snapping occasionally when the boy does something wrong.

He learns that her husband died in war, died fighting in his homeland. She found an outlet for her grief and anger in the boy.

He learns to understand the cause of her hatred but never forgets what she did in response to it. He becomes more careful about he acts, trying to stick to the background to avoid it happening again.
